On befriending yourself: the practice of Maitri

Maitri — loving-kindness toward oneself and others — is the heart of this practice. Rooted in the Buddhist tradition of Metta, it rests on a simple idea: deep healing doesn't come through self-judgment or forced change. It comes through the gradual, gentle work of befriending yourself — including the painful or difficult parts.

There is a false tension in our culture between taking care of yourself and taking care of others. But individual healing and collective wellbeing have always been inseparable. A person who has learned to befriend themselves moves differently in the world: with more steadiness, more empathy, more capacity for real connection.

Befriending yourself is not a finished state. It's a practice — one that deepens over years, shows up differently in each season of life, and quietly changes how you navigate everything else.
