FAQ

Common questions, honest answers

Starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions. Here are the ones that come up most — about fit, format, fees, and what the first session actually looks like.

Getting Started

Booking and fit

How do I book an appointment or get in touch? Fill out the Contact Form on this website, email contact@healingwithmaitri.com, or book a free consultation directly at healingwithmaitri.janeapp.com.

How do I know if we’re the right fit? The therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of good outcomes in counselling — so this genuinely matters. A good fit means feeling safe enough to be honest, respected rather than judged, and understood in your full context. Give it a few sessions, and if something feels consistently off, say so. You’re allowed to be discerning, and you’re never obligated to continue with a counsellor who isn’t working for you.

What to Expect

Sessions, pacing, and the work

What happens in the first session? Mostly getting to know each other. You’ll share what’s bringing you in, what you’re hoping for, and any questions you have. You don’t need to have it all figured out — showing up is enough.

Will it get harder before it gets easier? Often, yes. Counselling can stir things up before it settles them. You might feel more emotional, more aware of difficult patterns, or temporarily more unsettled than when you started. This usually means the work is happening.

How long are sessions and how often should I come? Sessions are 50 minutes. Most people start weekly to build momentum and continuity, then shift to biweekly or monthly as things evolve. How long you’ll need counselling overall depends on what you’re navigating — it’s always your call.

Fees & Insurance

Sliding scale, coverage, cancellation

Do you offer sliding scale or compassionate pricing? Yes. A sliding scale is available for up to 12 sessions, after which we reassess together. Financial barriers shouldn’t be what stands between you and support — reach out to discuss.

Do extended health benefits cover your services? Many BC extended health plans cover registered counselling. Check with your provider and ask specifically about coverage under “Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)” or “Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC).” Receipts are provided after each session for reimbursement.

Cancellation policy: Please provide 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or no-shows may be subject to the full session fee. Life happens — just reach out as soon as you can.

Location & Format

In-person & virtual across BC

Where are you located and do you offer virtual sessions? In-person sessions are held in North Burnaby, BC. Virtual counselling is available to anyone across British Columbia via JaneApp — a secure, confidential platform that requires no downloads. Online therapy is just as effective as in-person for most people, and for many the flexibility is preferable. You don’t need to be local to work together — if you’re anywhere in BC, you’re welcome here.

What do I need for a virtual session? A quiet, private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. Headphones are helpful for privacy. No special setup required.

Confidentiality

Privacy & legal standards

Is everything I share confidential? Yes — sessions are private and protected under professional and legal standards. There are limited exceptions, including serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if records are subpoenaed by a court. These will be explained clearly in your first session.

Areas of Focus & Readiness

Specialties & knowing when to start

What do you specialize in? Visit the About and Services pages for full details — including ADHD and neurodivergence, trauma, anxiety, burnout, BIPOC identity, and life transitions. The Workshops & Group page covers community and group-based offerings.

How do I know I’m ready? Waiting until you feel ready can keep you waiting a long time. Most people start counselling without feeling fully prepared — they just decide that not starting is harder than starting. Showing up uncertain is completely fine. That’s what the space is for.
